Bridging UW’s Technical Talent and Campus Needs: Introducing CS Marketplace

By Karen Barrett-Wilt

CS Marketplace is a program from the UWMadison Computer Sciences Department that connects campus researchers, departments, and other UW organizations who need custom software with skilled CS undergraduates ready to tackle real coding and AI projects. Through the program, students work on meaningful challenges—such as building data tools, websites, or research applications—while gaining hands-on experience and developing their portfolios. At the same time, UW departments, labs, and student organizations gain access to high-quality software development and technical expertise in a flexible, affordable way. It’s a partnership designed to advance campus innovation while giving the next generation of developers the hands-on experience they need to launch their careers.

CS Marketplace is a great, new way for UW organizations to gain help with their coding, automation, and AI projects while supporting students hungry for real-world experience, said CS Marketplace Director Amber Field. “You get your projects and research done faster for a price that fits your organizational budget, and students get great experience for their resumes. It really is a win-win.”

Ready to get involved? Whether you’re a campus organization with a technical challenge to solve or a CS student eager to build something that matters, CS Marketplace has a place for you. Organizations can submit a project for our Summer or Fall 2026 pilot programs — deadlines are late May and August 14, 2026, respectively. Undergraduate students who have taken CS 506 at UW-Madison can apply by submitting a resume, relevant coursework, and project interests, and will be matched with opportunities that fit their skills. Join us in turning UW-Madison’s technical talent into real solutions that make a difference across campus.
