On Saturday, October 30, 2021, family and friends celebrated the life of Computer Sciences Emeritus Professor Olvi Mangasarian (1934-2020). The service was recorded and is available here, including tributes by Leon Mangasarian (his son), CS Professor Michael Ferris (about Olvi’s work), Bob Meyer, and his youngest son Aram (reading a tribute from Dick Cottle of Stanford).
“When recruiting for new faculty in our [research] group, I state that we have no prima donnas, and that everyone has a voice and an ability to spread a vision. This is a key legacy from Olvi to the optimization group.” – Michael Ferris
Olvi was the John von Neumann Professor Emeritus of Mathematics and Computer Sciences at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He passed away on March 15, 2020 from complications from a fall and subsequent stroke. He was a pioneer, a leader, and an icon in the field of mathematical programming. Read his obituary here.
