Michael Gleicher named a Fellow of the ACM

The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) has named Michael Gleicher a 2025 Fellow for his contributions to graphics, multimedia, visualization, and robotics. ACM Fellows are registered members of the society and were selected by their peers for achieving remarkable results through their technical innovations and/or service to the field. This year’s honorees hail from 14 countries and were chosen from among ACM’s global membership of more than 100,000 computing professionals.
“I am deeply honored to be named an ACM Fellow,” said Gleicher. “This work has been a wonderful adventure shared with great students and collaborators. The recognition celebrates what we have done together.”
ACM President Yannis Ioannidis said that the awardees represent the top 1% of professionals in the ACM. “I personally enjoy reviewing the list of achievements of the new Fellows because it offers a snapshot of what’s happening in our field at the moment. This year, for example, we are honoring members working in well-established disciplines such as computer architecture and software engineering, alongside innovators in emerging disciplines like swarm intelligence or scene recognition. As we congratulate the new Fellows for their accomplishments, we hope that their work will also serve as an inspiration to the next generation.”
Gleicher has worked in a variety of areas of computer science including graphics, animation, multimedia, robotics and visualization. His work is notable for bridging between disciplines. “A theme for me is to be perpetually inspired,” said Gleicher. “I care about how people will see things and try to design for that. My work is about bringing graphics and HCI attitude to other fields.” More specifically, his work has brought data-driven approaches to computer animation and techniques from animation to multimedia, visualization and robotics.
Computer Sciences Chair Paul Barford is “thrilled to see Michael honored as an ACM Fellow. This honor is well-deserved. Michael has done fantastic work throughout his career, making significant research contributions in graphics and visualization.” Barford continues, “In addition to being a world-class scientist, Michael is also a great person — I feel very fortunate to have him as a colleague.”
ACM Fellows serve as ambassadors for the organization and are often called upon to offer their expertise to the media, public officials, and industry leaders. The 2025 ACM Fellows will be formally recognized during an awards banquet on June 13 in San Francisco. A full list of awardees can be found here.
