Emeritus Professor Mark D. Hill joins prestigious CRA Board, shaping the future of computing

Mark D. Hill, Emeritus Professor of Computer Sciences, has been elected to the Computing Research Association (CRA) Board of Directors to serve a three-year term. This year, more votes were received than ever before, and “the Board’s leadership is more vital than ever,” says CRA Director of Communications Matt Hazenbush. He continues, “CRA’s Board is a working board—one that dedicates its time, expertise, and energy to advancing CRA’s mission, driving strategic initiatives, and championing efforts to strengthen the computing research ecosystem.”

In addition to Hill’s position as the Gene M. Amdahl and John P. Morgridge Professor Emeritus of Computer Sciences at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, he is also a former Partner Hardware Architect at Microsoft Azure. A leading expert in computer architecture, he has made significant contributions to parallel computing, memory system design, and computer simulation.

Hill is a Fellow of ACM, IEEE, and AAAS, and a recipient of the 2019 Eckert-Mauchly Award, the highest honor in computer architecture. He also received the ACM SIGARCH Alan Berenbaum Distinguished Service Award and has served in leadership roles across academia and industry. He earned his PhD in computer science from the University of California, Berkeley.

Hill has been deeply engaged with CRA, including serving as Chair of the Computing Community Consortium (CCC) and CRA Board member (2018-2020). He also played a role in the formation of CRA-Industry. Through his service on the Board, he seeks to strengthen industry-academia collaborations and advance computing research initiatives. “I am pleased to give forward to CRA to the continue their work supporting computing research and education that is a hallmark of UW-Madison,” says Hill.
