Professor Bart Miller, the SC Conference, and some of his favorite people: his grad students

SC24, the International Conference for High Performance, Computing, Networking, Storage, and Analysis, takes place in Atlanta in November, 2024. Professor Bart Miller has had three grad students serve as conference chair since 2012, and many of his advisees have participated in the conference in other roles. Below is the intro to the fun and informative story published on the conference’s web page. Visit the link below for the full story about Miller, his students at SC, and their outsize impact on the conference.

An affable, earnest guy, Dr. Barton Miller, the Vilas Distinguished Achievement Professor in the Computer Sciences Department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW), has made an oversized impact on the SC Conference. Since 2012, three of Miller’s graduate students have served as Conference Chair: Dr. Jeffrey Hollingsworth (SC12), Dr. Dorian Arnold (SC23), and now Dr. Phillip Roth (SC24). In addition, many of his advisees have served on the committee in other roles, and their PhD students are now coming along as SC volunteers as well.

Is there something in the water in Madison? What magic words of wisdom has Dr. Miller imparted to his students to spur them to participate in the SC committee and aspire to leadership roles?

Speaking to Dr. Miller, it’s clear his graduate students are some of his favorite people. They become good friends – almost family. And to him, SC is like a family reunion. “SC is the center of the HPC universe,” he enthused. “Everything that’s happening in the field is there. It creates community.”
