Favorite/Funniest Memory

I misunderstood the kitchenware situation on the 5th floor PPE room! Thought they were up for grabs like hotel toiletries. When supplies ran low, I marched up and boldly asked, “I need paper towels for my apartment.” The look on their face! Next day there’s a giant sign: “BUILDING USE ONLY” with three underlines. Apparently I’m the reason we can’t have nice things… and why someone’s taking inventory after every coffee break.

I am deeply grateful to my family, friends, and professors whose unwavering support and encouragement turned this journey into a reality. It has been a path filled with challenges, growth, and unforgettable moments, none of which would have been possible without their support and belief in me. From late-night study sessions to words of wisdom when I needed them most, each one of them played a vital role in shaping my exciting and transformative master’s experience.

Favorite/Funniest Memory

Some of my favorite memories from my time in the Computer Science Department include late-night assignment marathons in the TA rooms, racing against deadlines. I also really enjoyed helping students during TA office hours as it was both rewarding and full of interesting questions. And of course, the long conversations and spontaneous brainstorming sessions in the CS lobby made for some unforgettable moments.

I’m sincerely grateful to all the professors I’ve learned from at UW–Madison for their invaluable guidance and support. A special thanks to Prof. Parmesh Ramanathan, my research advisor, for his mentorship throughout my journey. I’m also deeply thankful to my friends and family — and everyone who supported me along the way — for always being there through it all.

Favorite/Funniest Memory

One of the nicest memories was working late into the night in the CS labs for our Distributed Systems and Operating Systems courses. The teamwork, problem-solving, and shared moments of triumph, like when we finally got our project to pass all test cases, made it all worthwhile. We even turned a pizza order mix-up into an impromptu pizza party!

I’m indebted to all professors who I’ve had the good fortune of learning from. In the past 2 years, I’ve glimpsed the wisdom of several luminaries, professors, TAs and batchmates – all of whom have truly unfettered the way I solve problems. Professor Shivaram, Swift, Suman and Barford in particular, piqued my interest in systems and have helped me solve for scale – something that I’ve used at 2 different startups now (and planning to use at the 3rd!). My batchmates have helped me grapple with challenging projects and spurred me to go beyond what I deemed possible. And of course, the administration who’ve listened patiently through some of my predicaments and helping me navigate policy compliances. I know I’ve given you a tough time!

Favorite/Funniest Memory

Conversations with friends near the 6th floor coffee lounge. I’m sure we like structure in our schedules, but randomness is where the magic happens! You get ideas, approaches or sometimes just a good laugh-enough to shake you from inaction.

I’m incredibly thankful to my dad (Sridharan), mom (Srividya), and sister (Shri Krupa) back in India for their constant support throughout this journey. I feel truly blessed to have met amazing people here who made Madison feel like a second home. Thanks, Rajesh and Sai, for your support and encouragement — it truly meant a lot. The Park Tower days with you both will always be special. The pickleball and pool sessions, countless rounds of card games, and the deep conversations with my PMP friends – Smit, Surendra, Abhijeeth, Divy, Shivam, and Sujay are memories I’ll always cherish. I’m also grateful to the CS department faculty for challenging me with rich coursework and projects, helping me grow into a confident Software Engineer specializing in Systems and Databases. UW–Madison will always hold a special place in my heart, and I’m forever thankful for the experiences and memories here. On Wisconsin!

Favorite/Funniest Memory

Prof. AnHai’s classes were packed with sharp insights and fun moments — and if there’s one major thing I took away, it’s that “It depends” is not just a valid answer, it’s often the best one. Implementing Raft for the distributed systems course project under Prof. Andrea, taught us what true consensus really means — especially between our code, test cases, and sleep schedules. And of course, the seminars at 1240 — where the cookies were as rich as the discussions. Each moment added flavor (and sometimes sugar) to my CS journey!

To my wife Cadin, without whose love, support and brilliance I would be hopelessly lost, thank you.

Favorite/Funniest Memory

The many times we were invited up to the 6th floor for “leftovers”, here’s a smattering of subject lines/messages from a **case-sensitive** search of my inbox for simply “6th floor”: Cake in 6th Floor Lounge! | Breakfast food at the 6th floor lounge | Free cookies on 6th floor | leftover pizza in CS 6th floor | Pizza on the 6th floor | Casetta sandwiches 6th floor | Donuts 6th floor lounge | Hungry for cookies?? | Free pizza and drinks in 6th floor | Coffee and Cookies on 6th Floor | Cupcakes and macaroons in the 6th floor kitchen | … And so on, sometimes it was great, other times it was hardly worthy of the term “food”. My first semester here I brought cookies for a presentation I had to give, and someone asked me if I had simply procured them from the 6th floor and tried to pass them off as my own hard work and generosity. I replied indignantly that no, I hadn’t “6th floored it” and that I baked them myself. Everyone ate the cookies and seemed to enjoy them, hehe.

Favorite/Funniest Memory

At my undergraduate graduation ceremony, I said that discovering the vending machines in the basement of the Computer Sciences building was my favorite memory. Now, I’ll have to say something more heartfelt, and my favorite memory was climbing Bascom and seeing all the students by Science Hall scurrying to get to classes, knowing that I’ve been a part of that experience and unfortunately, I won’t get to be part of it again.

Favorite/Funniest Memory

One of my favorite memories was as a TA, when students would queue up during office hours to get their doubts cleared specifically by me. Hearing “you explain things so well” never got old — it felt great knowing I could make tough concepts a little less scary. Definitely a highlight of my time in the Computer Sciences Department. Who knew office hours could be so fun!
