Student Writer

Position: Writer
Dept of Computer Sciences, UW-Madison
8 hours/week

We’re looking for an upperclass undergraduate or graduate student to write new stories and feature articles about Computer Sciences faculty, staff, students, alumni, and programs. We’d like to hire an experienced writer who can write stories from the kernel of an idea to a finished story (under the supervision of the Communications Coordinator). You must be able to work independently and be willing to have your work edited, possibly several times per story. Experience with, or at least interest in, computer science and/or technology is preferred.

The Dept. of Computer Sciences will become part of the new School of Computer, Data, & Information Sciences (along with the Dept of Statistics and the iSchool) this fall, and we’ll also be working on stories related to the School as it rolls out. This is a great opportunity to gain writing experience, to work with a professional editor, to get exposure – your stories could be used on the College of Letters & Science website, the UW website, and released to the wider world – and to be in on the beginning of the School, which could easily lead to more opportunities as the School develops and grows.

Send a cover letter, resume, and three writing samples (preferably news or feature stories rather than creative writing – academic papers are ok), or any questions to Karen Barrett-Wilt at by August 12, 2019. Position to begin September 9.
