Solaris Operating System

Overview

Solaris is the current commerial UNIX offering from Sun Microsystems. It is available on Intel processors as well as Sun SPARC/UltraSPARC systems.

The CSL Solaris software offering consists of a full Solaris Developer and OEM product support, plus support for the AFS filesystem and kerberos 5 authentication mechanisms. Additional software from other sources can be found in /s on CSL-supported systems.

Depending on the size of the local disk, certain system files are accessed from AFS filesystem directories, not from the local disk. A minimum 1GB of local disk space is recommended for root disk on Solaris systems.

Upgrades to CSL linux from other OSs should be invisible, with the exceptions of user-compiled software and mh (see mh note).

Solaris 7 New Features

.

Solaris Distribution:Solaris 7
Authentication:Fully integrated with Kerberos, afs, ssh, etc. A fully functional kerberos/afs PAM is available.
New features:
  • Performance enhancements
  • Reliability improvements
  • Security fixes
64-bit kernel support:
  • Not supported on CSL-supported systems until a 64-bit AFS client is available (now in beta-test from Transarc)
  • Only produced for UltraSPARC systems, and not supported for Ultra 1 systems at or below 200 MHz clock speeds.
  • Systems running SPARC 32-bit kernel can be converted to 64-bit kernel by changing a boot parameter and rebooting the machine (when supported AFS client is available).

Software Changes:
mh
No longer maintained. nmh provides the same functionality; however, $HOME/.mh_profile may need to be updated.
Access to devices:
cdrom
Managed by the Solaris volume manager, and mountable as an iso9660 file system.
To mount, insert CD. To unmount, run eject cdrom
zip disk
X86:

Mount with mount-zip, unmount with unmount-zip. MS-DOS filesystem is supported.

SPARC:

Mount with mount, unmount with umount. UFS filesystems supported (pcfs not available).

floppy disk
Managed by the Solaris volume manager, and mountable as a pcfs (DOS) or ufs (Solaris) file system.
To mount, insert floppy (and run volcheck if the drive has an eject button). To unmount, run eject
Additional software installed for Solaris 7
SPARC

PC File Viewer 1.0.1
(views files generated from various PC office productivity packages)

Both platforms
Sun WorkShop 5.0

Solaris 8 New Features

.

Authentication:Fully integrated with Kerberos, afs, ssh, etc. A fully functional kerberos/afs PAM is available.
New features: See Sun's list of what's new in Solaris 8 for more details.
64-bit kernel support:
  • By default, Solaris 8 systems will be installed with 64-bit enabled for systems on which 64-bit kernels are supported (SPARCstation 5/10/20 and Ultra 1/1E models are excluded).

  • 64-bit systems can be configured to run the 32-bit kernel upon request by changing a boot parameter.
