1221 Projector Usage Guide
The projector in room 1221 CS&S runs Windows NT only. There is an Xserver installed on the machine to allow the display of Unix Xwindows applications from a remote Unix machine. A VCR and sound system have also been installed to facilitate a wide variety of presentation formats.
Below is a quick run-down of everything you will need to do in order to successfully use the projector in room 1221 CS&S.
Reserve The Room
Reservations for 1221 are handled through the Instructional Space Office.
Test And Troubleshoot Your Presentation
Please reserve the room so that you can test your presentation on the configuration you'll actually be using to show it. You can submit your reservations for the test run in the same fashion that you reserved the time for your presentation.
One of the main things you'll want to watch out for is the readability of your fonts on the projected image. X Windows users should also note that the rm1325 computer runs a slightly different environment than most folks are used to dealing with. While the vast majority of presentations should work identically on this workstation as they do on your office workstation, it's still a good idea to make sure before potentially embarassing yourself.
Turning The Projector On And Selecting An Input Source
The equipment in 1221 is owned and maintained by the universities Space Management Office. you can find information on using the sytem at the following URL.

Return And/or Shutdown The Equipment
Please remember to lock the cabinet, and shutdown the system, by pressing "SYSTEM OFF" on the control panel.
1325 Projector Usage Guide
The projector in room 1325 CS&S is connected to a computer which runs Windows NT Only. A VCR and sound system have also been installed in order to facilitate a wider variety of presentation formats.
All users with CS computer accounts have access to the Windows NT configuration.
Reserve The Room
In order to use the projector in room 1325 CS&S, you will need to have the room itself reserved for your use. If the presentation will be during your normally scheduled class time, no special action is required. In all other cases, you will need to reserve the room through the usual rooms service reservation procedures.
The remote control and cabinet key do not need to be reserved in advance. They simply need to be checked out from the department secretary in room 5355 CS&S shortly before your presentation. Be careful as the office is generally only open during business hours.

Check Out The Remote Control And Cabinet Key
The key and remote control for the 1325 projector are
NOT handled by the
CSL. You must sign the key out from the department secretary in room 5355 CS&S before you can use the equipment. Beware that this office is generally only open during business hours, so be sure to plan ahead. The remote is locked inside the cabinet in room 1325.
Raising And Lowering The Screen
The projection screen is controled electrically. Please do not touch the screen itself.
The switch which controls the screen is located on the metal column to the right of the equipment cabinet. Pushing the switch all the way toward the UP or DOWN positions will either fully retract or fully expose the screen.
To partially expose the screen, push the switch to the UP or DOWN position to start the screen moving in the desired direction. When the screen has reached the desired position, push the switch so that it is half way between UP and DOWN (the switch will be parallel with the column). This should stop the screen's motion immediately.
Turning The Projector On And Selecting An Input Source
In order to control the projector, you will need the small remote control in the presentation desk. This requires a key which can be checked out from the department secretary in room 5355 CS&S. This office is generally only open during business hours.
Before you turn on the projector, make sure that the device you wish to use as your input source is in the screen mode you are going to use for your presentation.
- For the VCR, this simply means it has to be turned on.
- For a laptop, have the monitor cable connected the unit ready to display.
- For Windows2000, wait until you get a login prompt.
Once the operating system has asked you to log in, the screen mode is ready for the projector to be turned on.
You can then turn on the projector by pressing the ON button near the top of the remote control. Note that the remote control may not work if you are standing near the computer. It may be necessary to move closer to the screen in order for the projector to "see" you.
Note: You may need to stand directly in front of the projector to use the remote control.
You may have to wait up to ten seconds for the projector to start displaying an image after it is turned on. If the projector does not project an image within ten seconds, it may be set to an input device which is not active.
Input devices can be selected by using the input selection buttons in the middle of the remote. Press "Comp1" to display the CS Workstation and "Comp2" for your laptop video connection.
CSL for assistance.
Note: You may need to wait up to 10 seconds from when the button is pressed to when the screen displays the image.
NOTE: If you reboot the computer or turn the projector on too early, you may cause the projected image to be detected incorrectly. This will result in the projected image being blurry, misaligned or otherwise unsightly. If this appears to be the case, turn the projector off by pressing the OFF button on the remote control,
wait a full 60 seconds and then press the ON button. If this does not clear up the problem, please
notify the CSL and we will investigate the problem.
Using The Sound System
The overhead sound system will function with the VCR and Windows 2000. There is currently no sound support for X Windows.
The sound system should already be adjusted for comfortable listening with both the VCR and Windows NT. In the event that you need to adjust the volume, you can find the audio mixer and amplifier beneath the VCR in the right side of the cabinet.
Be careful not to set the controls too loud as you may damage the sound system. Only small adjustments should need to be made. If you experience difficulties, please notify the CSL and we will investigate the problem.
Troubleshooting Bad Projected Images
The short version
The only thing you can really do to try to clear up an out of focus or misaligned image is power cycle the projector. Be sure to leave the projector off for a
full 60 seconds before turning it back on. If that does not clear up the problem, please
notify the CSL and we will investigate the problem. Above all, please
don't ever physically touch the projector.
The long version
There can be several reasons for an unacceptable projected image, only one of which you should really try to troubleshoot for yourself. The projector has a whole slew of very detailed settings for each video signal type that it can display. Every time the computer switches screen resolutions, the projector must detect this, identify the new signal it is getting, and adjust its settings accordingly. At times, it will not notice that the signal has changed. This results in the projected image suddenly becoming blurry, misaligned on the screen or otherwise unsightly.
The best solution for this problem is to not turn the projector on until the computer gets to the screen mode you actually want to work with. For either operating system, this means waiting until you get to the screen which asks you to log in. Turn on the projector at that point. If you forget and turn the projector on too early, turn it off for at least a minute (that means a
full 60 seconds) and turn it back on when you get to the correct screen. If this does not clear up the problem, please
notify the CSL and we'll take a look at it.
NEVER touch the projector itself! The projector is always slightly askew with respect to the screen. The trick is that it is always out of alignment at a precise angle, and the detailed settings mentioned above have been adjusted to compensate for this. If the image does not appear to be entirely on the screen, you can try power cycling the projector (leave it off for a
full 60 seconds) to see if it recalibrates. If this does not fix the problem, please
notify the CSL and we'll electronically realign the image.
Under no circumstances should you attempt to adjust the alignment of the projector or the screen yourself.
Return And/or Shutdown The Equipment
You can turn off all of the cabinet equipment at once by turning off the main power switch. The switch is located to the right of the VCR. Please also remember to use the projector's remote control to turn it off as well. The projector is not controlled by the main cabinet power switch.
Be sure to return the cabinet key to rm 5355 CS&S.
2310 Projector Usage Guide
The projector in room 2310 CS&S is connected to a computer which runs Windows NT only. The computer is equipped with a wireless mouse for greater presentation flexibility. A VCR and sound system have also been installed in order to facilitate a wider variety of presentation formats.
All usere with CS computer accounts have access to the Windows NT configuration.
Below is a quick run-down of everything you need to do in order to successfully use the projector in room 2310 CS&S.
Reserve The Room

If the presentation will be during your normally scheduled class time, no special action is required. In all other cases, you will need to reserve the room through the usual rooms service reservation procedures.
The remote control and cabinet key do not need to be reserved in advance. They simply need to be checked out from the Computer Systems Lab in room 2350 CS&S shortly before your presentation. Be careful as the office is generally only open during business hours.
Test And Troubleshoot Your Presentation
Please reserve the room and equipment so that you can test your presentation on the configuration you'll actually be using to show it. You can submit your reservations for the test run in the same fashion that you reserved the time for your presentation.
One of the main things you'll want to watch out for is the readability of your fonts on the projected image. While the vast majority of presentations should work identically on this workstation as they do on your office workstation, it's still a good idea to make sure before potentially embarassing yourself.
Your test run will also be a great time to ask the
CSL staff any questions you have which aren't answered on these web pages.
Pick Up The Projector Remote And Cabinet Key
If you require the use of the computer or projector, you will need to stop by the
Computer Systems Lab office (Room 2350 CS&S) shortly before your presentation to check it out. It is required that you leave your
UW-Madison photo identification card as collateral. We will return your ID when you return the key and remote.
If you need to use these accessories outside of
normal CSL office hours, we will do our best to accomodate your request.
Raising And Lowering The Screen
The projection screen is controled electrically. Please do not touch the screen itself.
The switch which controls the screen is located on the wooden column to the left of the equipment cabinet. Pushing the switch all the way toward the UP or DOWN positions will either fully retract or fully expose the screen.
To partially expose the screen, push the switch to the UP or DOWN position to start the screen moving in the desired direction. When the screen has reached the desired position, push the switch so that it is half way between UP and DOWN (the switch will be parallel with the wall). This should stop the screen's motion immediately.
Turning On The Projector And Selecting An Input Source
In order to control the projector, you will need the small black remote. The controller must be checked out from the
Computer Systems Lab in room 2350. Please be sure to return the controller when you are done with it.
Before you turn on the projector, make sure that the device you wish to use as your input source is in the screen mode you are going to use for your presentation. For the VCR, this simply means it has to be turned on. For Windows2000, wait until after you get the login screen. Once the operating system has asked you to log in, the screen mode is ready for the projector to be turned on.
You can then turn on the projector by pressing the ON button near the top of the small black and white remote control. Note that you must use the remote control while in front of the projector (near the screen). It will usually not work if you are standing near the computer. You may have to wait up to ten seconds for the projector to start displaying an image after it is turned on. If the projector does not project an image within ten seconds, it may be set to an input device which is not active.
Input devices can be selected using the numerical buttons on the black and white remote control. Press "Comp1" for the CS workstation and "Comp2/BNC" for your laptop video connection. Selecting "Video" is the connection for the VCR. If selecting an input device does not give you the image you expected, please go next door to the
CSL and ask for assistance.
NOTE: If you reboot the computer or turn the projector on too early, you may cause the projected image to be detected incorrectly. This will result in the projected image being blurry, misaligned or otherwise unsightly. If this appears to be the case, turn the projector off by pressing the OFF button on the remote control, wait a full 60 seconds and then press the ON button. If this does not clear up the problem, please
notify the CSL and we will investigate the problem.
Using The Sound System
The overhead sound system will function with the VCR and Windows 2000.
The audio mixer should already be adjusted for comfortable listening with both the VCR and Windows 2000. In the event that you need to adjust the volume, you can find the mixer in the brown equipment cabinet. It is the black box sitting underneath the VCR.
Please only attempt to adjust the control marked MASTER, located near the lower-right corner of the front panel. The other controls should already be set so that both the VCR and Windows 2000 are amplified to the same volume. Adjusting the MASTER control will change all volume levels at the same time and keep them in synch with each other.
If you experience any audio problems other than master volume control, please go next door to the
CSL and ask for assistance.
