Types Of Department Printers
See
SupportedPrinterPolicy for details on type of printers in use in this department.
Color Printing Accounting And Billing.
The cost of printouts will be billed to a department research account. In order to print to the color laser printer, you must provide the
Systems Lab with the fund information in advance.
Prints are $.80/page for transparency media and $.15/page for paper prints.
Duplex And Landscape Printing.
All public-access department printers are capable of duplex printing. This means that they have the capability to print on both sides of a page. Duplexing mode is the default
except on
c5-slide
To use the duplex capabilities:
On UNIX systems:
The following virtual printers are set up for the duplex-capable printers:
- <printer> - duplex printing
- <printer>-simplex - simplex printing (single-sided)
- <printer>-ls-duplex - landscape duplex printing
Note:When printing PostScript documents, the page orientation may be defined in the PostScript document, which will override the options selected by the different printer queues or lpr options below.
"Landscape duplex" printing expects the bound edge to be horizontal when reading the document. It will
not print the document in landscape mode unless you specify landscape printing
in addition to the printing mode.
Examples:
-
lpr -Pcopier-5 <file> prints <file> in normal duplex mode.
-
lpr -Pcopier-5-simplex <file> prints <file> in normal simplex mode.
To actually rotate the image (landscape printing), you will need to make sure your document is formatted properly before sending it to the printer. PDF viewers and word processing programs typically have printer option interfaces to do this and are not documented here as they vary from application to application. Text files can be rendered using
a2ps. See the man page for
a2ps or run
a2ps --help for a list of options available for rendering text files in a variety of orientations.
On Windows NT systems:
- Print using File | Print.
- Select the printer from the dialog box
- Click on Properties
- Select either "Short Side" or "Long Side" from the "Duplex Printing" section.
- Click "OK" to close the Properties dialog
- Click "OK" to print.
What are all these printer modes?
Simplex mode (one side of the page, long side on left of page)
Landscape mode (one side of the page, long side of top of page)
Duplex Mode (two sides of the page, long side of left of page)
"Landscape duplex" mode (two sides of the page, long side of top of page)
Note: "Landscape duplex mode only sets the duplexing mode; you must specify landscape mode also if you want your job rotated 90 degrees on the page.
Drivers
Links to Lanier driver downloads for our support Lanier products (as of 3/14/07):
You will need to accept the user license agreement terms to download these drivers, then select the operating system you are working with. Drivers are available for MacOS and various Windows flavors. Windows users have a choice of RPCS, PCL 5e, PCL6 and PostScript drivers. We configure our supported computers with PCL6 drivers. RPCS and PCL drivers have more intuitive GUI pages for selecting duplex, n-up and stapling (5th floor only) options, although certain applications have problems using anything but the PostScript driver. We recommend using the PCL6 drivers as a starting point.
Linux users can obtain PPD files for CUPS configuration by downloading the Windows PostScript driver and extracting the PPD file from the install files.
