Printing

How To Print A Document

On UNIX systems

Print Commands

  • lpr filename: This is the basic print command. It will print the file to your default printer in standard format with 66 lines/page and 80 columns/line. If you are printing a Postscript file, be sure to use this command and not print. If the file is in a format other than Postscript, it must be converted before printing.
  • print filename: Also prints to your default printer. print will reformat the text into 2-columns per page with borders and details.

Print Options

  • lpr -Pprinter filename: Specifies which machine the file will print to depending on which printers you can access. Note: To get a list of printers you have access to use lpquota -p
  • lpr -K# filename: Allows you to print multiple copies of a file.
  • lpr -Pprinter -Zmanual filename or lpr -Pprinter-manual filename: This command is for printing to the bypass tray for Lanier printers/copiers or MBF (manual feed) tray in the Xerox phaser printers for A4 and other paper sizes. The printer will wait until you have placed the paper into the tray before printing.
  • print -[1,2,or 4] filename: Will allow you to print 1,2,or 4 pages per sheet. In addition to print, you may also use a2ps, mpage, or psnup for multiple pages/sheet if print is not a viable option for the document you wish to print. If this is the case, please see the man pages for how to use these other programs. This only works for text files; do not use this option for PDF or PostScript documents.
  • lpr -Pprinter-simplex: If your default settings print on both sides of the page, this command will print the job single-sided.
  • lpr -Pprinter-duplex: This command will flip the page over on the long side to print on both sides of the page.
  • lpr -Pprinter-ls-duplex: This command will flip the page on the short side to print on both sides. Note: PostScript jobs with page orientation command embedded in them will NOT be overridden by sending to these special duplex queues.

Cancelling a Job

  • lprm username: This will cancel all jobs by that user. You can use the -Pprinter option to specifiy a printer. This is the quickest way to cancel a job, otherwise you can use:
  • lpq: Checks the printer queue and displays all jobs currently printing and waiting. Again, you can use the -Pprinter option to specify. Find the job you want to cancel and get the number assigned to it, then use:
  • lprm -Pprinter job#: to cancel the job.

On Windows systems

Printing

File | Print will open up the printing window with option menus allowing you to choose which printer the job will go to, how many copies, etc. If you need something that is not listed in this window, click on advanced for more options such as duplexing or page orientation. Select the options that you want and click OK.

Note: Not all printers have user-controllable printer options.

Cancelling a Job

On the taskbar there should be a printer icon that you can double click on to bring up a list of your pending print jobs. Right click on the job listed and select Cancel.

Paper Quota

Checking Your Quota

  • Unix: Type lpquota to check your printer quota. Your printer quota is also displayed in the "Message of the Day" box on your screen each time you log in.
  • Windows: Your quota is shown in the "Message of the Day" when you first log in, or you can hit Ctrl+Alt+Delete to bring up your login information.

Note:In printing, the quota is checked at the beginning of the job, so there is the chance that you could exceed your quota. If this occurs and you wish to purchase more paper, you must also pay for the sheets that went over in addition to your new allotment.

Purchasing Paper

To purchase more paper, go to the Systems Lab, 2350 Computer Science. Bring your checkbook or a money order; we can not accept cash. The process is simple and quota adjustments are normally processed in a few minutes. The Systems Lab is open from 8AM to 5PM, Monday-Friday, and can handle your paper purchase during those times. Unused purchased paper is carried over to the next semester. Prices are as follows:

Price Pages
$1.50 25 sheets
$2.75 50 sheets
$5.25 100 sheets
$7.75 150 sheets
$10.25 200 sheets

Printer Access And Defaults

On all department systems

Color Printing

The department color printers are set up only for research users. Users are billed to a UW fund for any printouts generated on these printers. Faculty who need access to the color printers should mail lab@cs.wisc.edu with a fund to bill against. Other users (staff and graduate students) need to get a faculty member to submit fund information on their behalf for billing purposes.

On UNIX systems

Checking and Changing

Type lpquota -p to see a list of printers you have access to.

Changing the Default Printer

Set the PRINTER environment variable before running the print command. Users using csh or tcsh shells can add the following to their .cshrc.local file to make this setting take effect in all terminal windows:

*setenv PRINTER <printername>*

You may also need to add the following to your .profile file (create the file if you do not have one):

PRINTER=<printername> export PRINTER
This is needed to set a default printer during the login process, especially for those using the GNOME desktop.

On Windows systems

Setting a Default

  1. Open the Printers list, either from My Computer or from Start Menu -> Settings -> Printers
  2. Double click on the printer queue you want to make the default
  3. Select Printer -> Set As Default Printer

Adding a Printer

For supported Windows computers, contact lab@cs.wisc.edu. For non-supported Windows computers, you can follow directions posted with usage of the wireless network for adding printers.

How Do I Print To One Of The Lanier Copiers?

Documents can be printed direct from your desktop to the Lanier copier on the 5th floor (room 5352). This allows you to use many of the advanced copier features, such as stapling or watermarking, your document without having to print the document on a printer and then copy the document. The cost/page of the copier is also signficantly lower than dedicated printers.

On UNIX systems:

Print to one of the following queues using lpr, depending on which duplex mode you prefer to use (select with the -P flag):

  • copier-5-duplex: duplexing on long-side of document
  • copier-5-ls-duplex: duplexing on short-side of document
  • copier-5-simplex: single-sided output
  • copier-5: same as copier-5-duplex

Add one of the following -Z flags to enable stapling:

  • -Z staple: same as -Z staple_ulp
  • -Z staple_ulp: upper-left, vertical staple, location 1
  • -Z staple_ulps: upper-left, slanted staple, location 1
  • -Z staple_urp: upper-right, vertical staple, location 2
  • -Z staple_urps: upper-right, slanted staple, location 2
  • -Z staple_llp: lower-left, vertical staple, location 3
  • -Z staple_llps: lower-left, slanted staple, location 3
  • -Z staple_lrp: lower-right, vertical staple, location 4
  • -Z staple_lrps: lower-right, slanted staple, location 4
  • -Z staple_l2: 2 vertical staples, left-side, location 5
  • -Z staple_r2: 2 vertical staples, right-side, location 6

Note:any flags, including -P queue specification and -Z option flags must be specified BEFORE the files to be printed.

On Windows systems

Use the copier-5 printer. For unsupported PC's and wireless users, you may need to install the proper printer driver.
  • Download the driver for the correct model copier/printer. See the above link for download sites for various printer drivers.
  • Be sure to configure your printer driver. We have an SR970 finisher installed on the 5th floor copier; if you don't configure this, you won't be able to get your documents stapled.
  • To enable/disable features, go to the Print menu and choose Properties of the printer. From here, you can enable duplexing, stapling, watermarks, multiple copies, etc.

On Macintosh systems

  • Use the copier-5 printer.
  • You will need to install the proper PPD file for our copier/printer. See CSL Wireless And Laptop Network for copier/printer models and web site addresses where you can download the PPD files.
  • Be sure to configure your printer driver. We have an SR970 finisher installed on the 5th floor copier; if you don't configure this, you won't be able to get your documents stapled.
  • To enable/disable features, go to the Print menu and choose Printer Features. From here, you can enable duplexing, stapling, etc.

How Do I Print On Colored Paper?

Note:colored paper is ONLY loaded by default on the 5th floor copier. You can use manual-feed on other copiers to get colored paper.

On UNIX systems

Add the following option to your print command to get colored paper: -Z color

On Windows systems

  • On lab-supported Windows computers, simply choose Color1 as the Paper Type, located in the Options section of the print menu.
  • On laptops and other Windows computers, you will need to go into the printer setup and set up paper input as follows:

Tray Orientation Size Type
Tray 1 Portrait (vertical) orientation Letter Plain
Tray 2 Portrait (vertical) orientation Letter Color1
Tray 3 Landscape (horizontal) orientation Legal Plain
By-pass Portrait (vertical) orientation Letter Transparency

On Macintosh systems

Macintosh setup is similar to Windows setup above...you need to define paper types/sizes for each tray for the 5th floor copier to utilize the various paper types.
