PDAs, Smart Phones and other wireless devices
Handheld devices that can not authenticate to the wireless network via
the existing wireless authentication gateway can use the "handheld"
wireless network.
To use the handheld network, your wireless device must first be
registered. To register the device, you will need the WI-FI MAC address
and a description of the device.
* A note for Apple itouch users: you can get the WI-FI MAC address from
Settings > General > About then scroll down to
Wi-Fi Address
Use the "Handheld Device Wireless Access Request" form
www-auth.cs.wisc.edu. Enter the MAC address (2 hex digits per cell) and
the label for your device.
After you submit your request, the lab will process it and make the
necessary network configuration changes. You will be notified when the
changes have been made.
Once registered, join the
handheld wireless network. Your device will get an IP address using DHCP, and have access to the internet.
Handheld network firewall
The handheld wireless network is restricted as follows:
- All network connections must be initiated from the wireless network device
- Outbound email must be submitted to the CSL authenticated STMP server (
sabe.cs.wisc.edu)
- Certain insecure protocols are restricted.
