bitmap: X Bitmap Editor

bitmap is a simple X bitmap editor; it is part of the X Window System distribution. Output is a standard X11 bitmap. For more information, please see the man page.

GIMP: The GNU Image Manipulation Program

The GIMP is the GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed piece of software suitable for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring.

It is an extremely capable piece of software with many capabilities. It can be used as a simple paint program, a expert quality photo retouching program, an online batch processing system, a mass production image renderer, a image format converter, etc.

gv and mgv allows the user to view and navigate through PostScript and PDF documents on an X display by providing a user interface for the ghostscript interpreter.

NOTE: gv has been deprecated as of RedHat? 5 Linux. RH5 users can continue to use mgv instead.

ImageMagick: Graphics Editor

ImageMagick is a GUI grapics editor to modify graphics files of various formats. ImageMagick is also capable of generating animated images from a series of still images.

Some of the graphics formats supported by ImageMagick include:

  • GIF
  • JPEG
  • MPEG
  • PNM

TGIF can also do some GIF animation.
