Getting Help Using CSL Workstations

There are several sources of help:

CSL Documentation

Online Help

  • On Unix, look at the man or info pages relating to your problem. For a general search of the man pages by keword, use the command: man -k keyword
  • On Windows, look through the online help (usually available in the Help menu for the application).

Fellow Students

  • Many of your fellow students have had the same problems. Ask around. Chances are, you'll find someone with the same problem. Compare notes.

The Computer Systems Lab

  • If you can not find the answer you are looking for in the online help or in the CSL Documentation, please email lab@cs.wisc.edu with your question.
  • Please be sure to include the following information in your message:
    • Your login name, if you are sending mail from a different account
    • The name of the workstation on which you are having difficulty
    • When you encountered the problem
    • What program you were trying to use
    • The exact command-line you used to run the program
    • File and directory names for any input files of any kind
    • The exact error messages or output
    • If you changed anything inyour environment between the time the program last worked and the time you noticed the problem, please tell us exactly what changed.
    • As much additional information as you can provide.
  • When you reply to a message that's in the request tracking system, please make sure to cc to lab@cs.wisc.edu, so that all followup information is also in the request database.
