FTP Server
How Can I Put Files Up On The Department FTP Server?
All files available for download should be copied to
/p/ftp (or
P:\ftp from Microsoft Windows computers). Users who do not have a writable location in this hierarchy should notify
lab@cs.wisc.edu to request an FTP directory.
Projects intending to put many files on the server for download should plan on allocating project AFS disk space for FTP service. This storage space should also be accessible from within your project AFS space. Please specify your requested mount point for this storage space if you have a preference.
How Do I Access URL's On The Department FTP Server?
The URL
ftp://ftp.cs.wisc.edu/ or
http://ftp.cs.wisc.edu/ translate to the path
/p/ftp (or
P:\ftp from Microsoft Windows computers).
Can I Set Up A Place For FTP Uploads?
You can, however, you will have to provide disk space in AFS for the upload directory.
Upload directories are discouraged for security reasons, although we can set this up on a case-by-case basis. Contact
lab@cs.wisc.edu for establishing an upload directory.
Can I Get A Report Of Files Downloaded From My FTP Directories?
Yes. You need to contact
lab@cs.wisc.edu to enable such reporting.
You have some options for these reports; please review these options before requesting reports to be enabled:
- Report frequency (daily/weekly/monthly)
- Hourly traffic report (downloads sorted by time)
- Domain traffic report (downloads sorted by domain)
- Transfer details (include individual transaction logs, including download time and IP address/hostname of download clients)
- Report recipients (who receives the reports when generated)
When requesting reports, please specify which of these items you want in your reports. By default we will enable all these options with reports sent out weekly.
Do The FTP Reports Include Files Downloaded Via HTTP?
Yes. HTTP downloads are included in FTP reports. All HTTP transactions will show up as user "WEB_USER" in detailed transaction logs. Also, download times are not accurate, as the web server does not log transaction times, only date/time and origination location of the transaction.
