Crash And Burn Lab
Where Is The Crash And Burn Lab?
The Crash and Burn lab is located in room 1355 of the Computer Sciences building.
How Long Can I Use A Crash Disk?
You may check a disk out for a semester. At the end of this period, you must either return the disk or, if you require the disk longer, request a renewal subject to labstaff approval.
How Do I Get Access To The Crash And Burn Lab?
In order to get access to the Crash and Burn Lab, please visit the
Crash and Burn Lab Forms. Follow the directions to request a disk.
You will be assigned a disk when you fill out the web form. Come up to room 2350 during normal business hours (8 AM to 5 PM, Monday through Friday) to check out your disk. You will also receive a key for a disk locker corresponding to the disk number you checked out. The lockers are in room 1355 to your immediate left as you enter the room.
I Turned On The Computer I Want To Use And It Said There Is No Boot Device! What's Wrong?
Take the drive you checked out and put it into the one of the big holes (drive bays) in the front of one of the computers label side up, then lock the drive bay using the small key you received, and turn on the machine. Do not insert or remove a drive while the machine is powered up. You must lock the drive bay or the drive will not power up.
My Key is Broken/Lost. What do I do?
If you broke or lost a key, contact
lab@cs.wisc.edu and the CSL will respond with further instructions. Please try to be as specific as possible with the message.
What Are We Allowed To Put In The Lockers?
The only thing which should be put in the locker is the hard drive that you checked out. Specifically not allowed is food or
any liquid.
I Spilled A Drink In My Locker. What Should I Do Now?
Prepare to pay for any drives that were damaged, as well as the time of the labstaff to test the drives and clean up the lockers.
Can I Leave My Drive In A Computer When I Am Not Using It?
No, Because we have 40 drives and only 10 computers, when you are not working on your project, you will need to shut down the computer and put your drive away. You should use the lockers in room 1355 for safe storage.
I Left My Drive In A Computer And Wandered Off, And Now My Drive Is Missing! What Do I Do Now?
If you are very lucky, another student needed to use the machine while you were gone. They should have e-mailed lab, and placed your drive on top of the machine.
If you are lucky, one of the labstaff noticed you left it in the computer and took it for safe keeping.
If you aren't lucky, someone stole it and you will have to pay the cost of replacement.
All Of The Computers Have Drives In Them Already But No One Is At The Console. What Should I Do?
Users are not allowed to leave drives in computers. If a computer has a drive in it and seems unattended, wait a bit (~1 hour), then e-mail
lab@cs.wisc.edu
If the user is really not around, you are authorized to power down the machine and remove their drive. Notify the lab by e-mail that you have removed their drive per CSL policy and then place it on top of the machine. The lab will forward the message to the user and take care of any other issues.
Can I Check Out Multiple Disks at a Time?
Yes. However, this can only be done in times of low demand. If it is believed that you are hoarding or hogging disks, we will ask you to return them and will lock your account if you do not comply. Each disk you have checked out is independent (that is, you can specify different due dates), but they are bound to the same policies. Please exercise discretion and understand that there are situations in which we cannot give users multiple disks.
What Hardware Is In These Computers?
The Crash & Burn computers contain the following hardware:
| part | description |
| CPU | Pentium 4 3.0 GHz |
| Memory | 1 GB PC3200 DDR400 |
| Disk | 80GB SATA |
| Motherboard | Intel 915 Motherboard (with onboard video, audio, and network) |
Note: The logical names for the disk, mouse, video, and network are OS dependent. Please refer to the OS documentation for this information.
Monitor: Viewsonic 21" GS-815 Graphics Series Monitor
| Horizontal Sync Range | 30 - 121 kHz |
| Vertical Sync Range | 50 - 150 Hz |
| Maximum Resolutions | 1920x1440 @ 80 Hz |
| 1800x1440 @ 80 Hz |
| 1600x1200 @ 95 Hz |
| 1280x1024 @ 110 Hz |
What Are The Network Configuration Parameters?
The IP address and hostname are on the drive labels. For reference, the disks IP addresses begin at
128.105.100.123 on
crash-01.cs.wisc.edu and continue sequentially to
128.105.100.162 with
crash-40.cs.wisc.edu.
NOTE: If you are using multiple disks in the same computer, you
MUST choose only one IP address to use as the IP address of your system.
The network parameters are:
| domain | cs.wisc.edu |
| subnet | 128.105.100 |
| netmask | 255.255.255.0 (0xffffff00) |
| broadcast | 128.105.100.255 |
| gateway | 128.105.100.248 |
| name server | 128.105.252.100 |
How Is The Network Access Restricted?
