About the CSL

Who we are

The Computer Systems Lab, (CSL) is the organization that operates and maintains the computer facilities of the Computer Sciences Department.

We are responsible for software and hardware support and maintenance, upgrades and distribution of equipment. The Systems Lab employs seven full-time staff and about fifteen students. We are all listed in CSL Staff Profiles.

What we do

The Systems Lab handles moving all computer equipment in the department (new equipment arriving, moving machines from office to office and disposing of junk equipment). We also perform software maintenance on all supported computers in the department.

Software Support

Software support and maintenance is handled in differing levels. Fully supported software is maintained by CSL staff or fixes are obtained through software support contracts. We will provide a recent version of any partially supported software (such as GNU programs); CSL staff will only provide bug fixes posted by software authors for these programs.

Hardware Support

Hardware problems are handled by CSL staff when possible. Some problems are fixed in our shop, others require shipping the broken part to the vendor for repair. The CSL also handles all networking for the Computer Sciences department.

Accounts

The Systems Lab manages all accounts on Computer Sciences computers for both instructional and research use.

When we are open

The Computer Systems Lab office is generally open during the following hours while school is in session:

  • 8 am-12 pm and 1-5 pm, Monday-Friday
  • 8-10 pm Monday-Thursday
  • noon-2 pm, Saturday and Sunday

Note that the professional staff is only available during the day, M-F.

When are the instructional computer rooms open?

The instructional computer rooms (located on the first floor of the Computer Sciences building) are open 7am - 1am every day. The building is closed on University holidays.

The instructional computers may be out of service between semesters.

Where we are

The Systems Lab is located in 2350 Computer Sciences. It's the second floor of unit III -- by the double elevators.
