The Department of Computer Sciences admits graduate students once a year, for the fall semester only. The application is online and is administered by the Graduate School.
Note: If you are reapplying to the department, being admitted after a deferral or re-entering the program, you must submit a new Graduate School application.

The graduate school application includes a computer sciences supplemental application where we obtain information about your interests and background. Please check your application for accuracy and thoroughness before submitting it. The application fee must be paid at the time of submission. The department is not able to view your application until the fee is paid and the application is submitted.
4. Important Details
CS Department Graduate Application Requirements. These requirements are incorporated into the graduate school application.
- Three electronic letters of recommendation. Directions for these can be found with the Graduate School Application.
- GRE General Test. Test scores should be sent electronically directly by ETS to UW-Madison (code 1846). The scores go to a central test score database on campus and are shared by any programs to which you apply. You do not need to specify department code.
- TOEFL or IELTS exam is required for International Students unless they qualify for an automatic waiver. For further information on TOEFL and IELTS requirements, please see the Graduate School Admission Requirements.
- PDF of your official transcript (transcript which has been issued by the university) from each college or university you have attended. You will be asked to upload this into your graduate school application. Your application will be considered incomplete unless it contains uploaded official transcripts from each postsecondary institution you have attended. Please do not mail transcripts to the department or the Graduate School. No paper transcripts will be accepted during the application process.
If you are offered admission, you will be required to submit paper official transcripts. Please do not send them during the application process.
