Readings / Read0415AdvancedMographs

On Wednesday, April 15th, we'll talk about more advanced issues in Synthesis-By-Example.

There are lots and lots of possible topics. And lots and lots of possible papers. I'm not even sure which to choose to discuss.

So, what I'd like everyone to do:

  • Read over my annotated bibliography here
  • Pick a few papers
  • Read (at least one) closely, and at least one other quickly.
  • Write a summary (a few sentences at least) on the discussion board (here)

The goal is to get a diversity of papers read by the class, so we can discuss all kinds of ideas (that might lead to project ideas). So look over a bunch of stuff, and come prepared for discussion!

(and contribute to the online discussion here)

You can pick papers that aren't in the bibliography, but please give the citation information in your discussion page post.

Here are some suggestions - but they are just suggestions.

Splicing - not in the bibliograpy, but interesting

  • Splicing Upper-Body Actions with Locomotion (project page) - this could make for a nice project, although you'd need to implement dynamic time warping first.

Controllable Characters

  • Responsive Characters from Motion Fragments (project page) - Interesting combination of tactics to make highly controllable characters (reinforcement learning, user modeling, quality/response tradeoffs...)
  • Near-optimal Character Animation with Continuous Control (project page) - application of reinforcement learning and control theory to character control. Hard to read, but probably worth figuring out.

Mixing Graphs and Parameterizations

  • Parametric Motion Graphs (project page) - I am partial to my own papers.
  • Fat Graphs (paper) - simpler (but lower quality) than PMGs
  • Interpolated Motion Graphs (project page) - probably the most impressive search-based synthesis system to date.

Other suggestions: OK, there are so many good choices, I don't know where to start. In the bibliography, [H.IAF05] might suggest good projects, [H.Z+05] discusses something we alluded to (combining physics with mographs), [H.RP07] is a thorough mograph discussion, ...
