John Birge, Jerry W. and Carol Lee Levin Professor of Operations Management: Inferring Structure from Optimization Model Solutions
Room:
Wisconsin Institute for Discovery (WID), Room 3280b (3rd floor teaching lab). Anyone without WID access can use the special events elevator on the WID 1st floor (near Aldo Café) to access room 3280.
Speaker Name:
John Birge, Jerry W. and Carol Lee Levin Professor of Operations Management
Speaker Institution:
Graduate School of Business, University of Chicago Understanding the behavior of participants in markets, such as those for electricity, requires knowledge of their views on the impact of their supply (or demand) quantities. This view is in turn informed by observable prices and quantities in equilibrium. For electricity markets, system operators collect and make available these data which are derived from the solution of an optimization model. A key element, the transmission network, is, however, not revealed. This talk will discuss the inverse optimization problem to find the hidden network structure. Some results for the Midwest Independent Transmission System Operator (MISO) will be presented.
