Optical Access Networks and Advanced Photonics: Technologies and Deployment Strategies

A book edited by Dr. Ioannis P. Chochliouros and Dr. George A. Heliotis
Hellenic Telecommunications Organization (OTE) S.A., Greece

*** Introduction
With the current continuously growing bandwidth demand, it is apparent that conventional broadband access solutions (i.e. xDSL and cable-modem networks) will quickly become bottlenecks in terms of bandwidth provision. This book will present a comprehensive overview of the emerging optical access network solutions, which offer unprecedented levels of performance and promise to efficiently meet the anticipated growth in bandwidth demand. These novel access network implementations can create a plethora of new business opportunities and, hence, pave the way for the introduction of advanced services that will pertain to a truly broadband society. It is evident that this creates potential opportunities and challenges not only for the technology-related sector but affects strongly other areas as well, including but not limited to strategic choices, investments, commercial and business policy, regulatory initiatives, social considerations and many more.

*** Objective of the Book
The core objective of the book is two-fold: First, it will discuss the technical challenge imposed by fibre-optic access networks worldwide as a choice (or even as a “necessity”) of network operators, in order to provide immediate “responses” to the fast evolutionary progress in bandwidth demand. To this aim, the book will provide a thorough treatment and evaluation of specific technology trends in order to realize the expected beneficial use of optical access infrastructures, as a “modern” and viable network solution. On the other hand, the book will also examine current market cases and related strategic initiatives, and will assess potential opportunities observed at the global level, by analyzing specific business cases, as currently observed in Asia, America and Europe. It will analyze the current diversity among international markets, a very important issue in the scope of liberalized and competitive markets.

Hence, the book will examine the entire challenge, by providing a thorough overview of the current technological state-of-the-art together with the related business challenges and opportunities. Technical, strategic, business, commercial, regulatory and social issues affecting further development will be considered.

*** Target Audience
The target audience of the book will be composed of professionals and researchers working in the field of optical networking and photonics, and generally within the communications sector. These include: telecommunication engineers, network designers and planners, network operators and service providers, photonics component manufacturers and re-sellers, academics and researchers, telecommunications regulators and attorneys, and telecommunications market analysts. Moreover, the book will constitute a valuable source of well-rounded information to ICT business development managers and executives of enterprises intending to perform network, service and other business activities on the basis of the deployment of optical access networks.

*** Recommended topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Optical Access and FTTx technologies, systems and architectures.
- Photonics components and subsystems design and development that enable the FTTx revolution.
- Novel WDM-based FTTx schemes, systems, and components.
- Emerging short-haul communications network systems and technology enablers.
- Global FTTx deployment status, policies, challenges and strategies.
- Business prospects and innovative services in competitive broadband communications markets.
- Market scenarios & experiences gained from the deployment of optical access infrastructures.
- Economic and Regulatory issues impacting worldwide FTTx deployment and related international policy trends.
- Future prospects of broadband optical access networks and related services.

*** Submission Procedure
Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before May 15, 2008, a 2-3 page chapter proposal clearly explaining the mission and concerns of his or her proposed chapter. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by May 31, 2008 about the status of their proposals and sent chapter guidelines. Full chapters are expected to be submitted by July 31, 2008. All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a double-blind review basis. The book is scheduled to be published by IGI Global (formerly Idea Group Inc.), www.igi-global.com, publisher of the IGI Publishing (formerly Idea Group Publishing), Information Science Publishing, IRM Press, CyberTech Publishing, Information Science Reference (formerly Idea Group Reference), and Medical Information Science Reference imprints.
