A four-hour tutorial given at the Fifth Global Grid Forum.
The Grid is an untapped resource. Vast amounts of computing power and storage are available. But, without sophisticated middleware and end-user software, the Grid will sit idle. The Condor Project aims to empower individual users with the software to harness the Grid. At the University of Wisconsin, the Condor distributed batch system has provided computing cycles since 1985. To extend this expertise to the Grid, the Condor Project is developing a variety of tools that discover, claim, manage and use large numbers of Grid resources.
In this tutorial, we offer practical instruction in real Grid computing. We will begin with the Condor distributed batch system, which creates a high-throughput computing facility from commodity desktop and cluster machines. We will also discuss a variety of other Grid technologies being developed by the Condor Project. These include the Condor-G job submission system, the DAGMan persistent dependency manager, the NeST grid storage appliance, and the PFS transparent I/O agent. Throughout, we will show how the Condor software interacts with existing systems and standards. we will chart a larger design for grid computing.
We will show how to construct a variety of larger computing structures, such as personal grids, I/O communities, and data-driven job managers. Examples will be small practical systems built from standard tools that may be downloaded and used after the tutorial.
This talk was presented as a 2-hour introductory tutorial on Condor at the First EuroGlobus Workshop in Lecce, Italy on June 2001.
In addition to introducing Condor, it explains several of Condor's mechanisms for working in a Grid-based computing environment. Condor-G is also presented.
