Grid Exerciser

The Grid Exerciser (GEx) maintains a load on one or more grid sites and reports on the resulting throughput. Benefits include:

• Being able to compare theoretical throughput with actual throughput.
• Maintaining ongoing, pervasive load can uncover problems not revealed by spot testing (For example, slow disk space exhaustion as jobs move through the system) or low-load testing (For example, scalability problems).

At this point the GEx only exercises compute elements.

The GEx consists of several parts:

• site_submit starts a GEx run, submitting the necessary jobs.
• summarize_condor_log generates reports on throughput and errors.

Quick Intro

1. Create and move into a working directory

   % mkdir grid_exerciser_runs
   % cd grid_exerciser_runs
   

2. Submit jobs to one or more sites

   % site_submit grid.example.com/jobmanager-condor 10 \
       grid2.example.net/jobmanager-pbs 20
   

3. Note the directory created for the run. To generate reports run the reporting tool against that directory

   % summarize_condor_log ./
