Hi,
Is it possible to configure condor to always run boinc backfill jobs
at a nice priority of 20, even if the machine is claimed by a users
condor process? I have users running jobs that don't use 100% of the
CPU (see the attached plot). This usage is reasonable for what the
user is doing, but I'd like to the spare CPU cycles on the machine
given to boinc by the kernel scheduler.
My condor config contains:
ENABLE_BACKFILL = TRUE
BACKFILL_SYSTEM = BOINC
START_BACKFILL = TRUE
EVICT_BACKFILL = FALSE
which runs boinc when there is no user condor process, but when a
user claims the machine, the boinc process get's kicked off (which I
think is the expected behavior):

Yes. You just need to do the following:
A) "Lie" to Condor about how many CPUs your machine has so you have
some extra "slots" to configure. E.g., on a single CPU machine,
you'd use "NUM_CPUS = 2".
B) Configure one of the slots to never run Condor jobs and always run
backfill jobs. There's a section in the manual about how to do these
sorts of slot-specific policies.
C) In your config file when specifying the path to your BOINC client,
you can also define "boinc_Renice = 20" and that should ensure that
the BOINC client (and all its children) are started with nice value 20.
